What does "non-reflective" mean in window tint?

Two constructions behave very differently here:

  • Metallized films reject heat by reflecting solar energy off a thin metal layer. That's an effective way to block heat, and it's why mirrored film exists — but it can give the glass a bright, silvered look from outside, particularly in daylight, and the metal layer can interfere with signal.

  • Dyed and ceramic films reject heat by absorbing it. They stay visually neutral, so the appearance stays close to factory glass at every shade.

Two things worth reading off that table. Reflectance barely moves — 5% at the darkest shade, 7% at the lightest — so the non-reflective appearance holds whichever shade you choose. Madico's Onyx is a metallized film, and it's worth noting it still measures 5% visible light reflected — metallized doesn't automatically mean mirrored. What it does mean is a conductive layer, and therefore possible signal effects. If signal matters to you, a dyed or ceramic film avoids the question entirely.

Will non-reflective tint keep my car cool?

Straight answer: less than a ceramic film will. Black Pearl NR rejects 26% of infrared energy and 40% of total solar energy at its darkest shade. Will non-reflective tint fade or turn purple?

That failure mode — dyed film going purple and hazy after a few summers — comes from cheap film where the dye sits unprotected and breaks down under UV. Black Pearl NR is solution dyed: the dye is dissolved into the polymer before the film is formed, so color runs through the material rather than sitting on it. Quality non-reflective film won't. Purple tint is a specific failure mode of cheap dyed film: the organic dyes in the blend break down under UV at different rates, and once the stabler components wash out, the residual purple is what's left behind.
