What is dyed window tint?

Dyed window film blocks solar energy by absorbing it rather than reflecting it. A dye layer within the film takes in visible light and some solar heat, then releases it back into the air. Nothing bounces off the glass, which is why dyed films look like darker glass rather than a mirror.

That absorbing behavior gives dyed film three consistent characteristics:

  • A clean, non-reflective appearance. Across Madico's dyed range, visible light reflectance sits at 5–7% at every shade. There is no metallic sheen from any angle.

This is where films that all get called "dyed" stop being the same product. The distinction is where the dye lives.

Dye-in-laminate

The dye is embedded between layers of film, sandwiched inside the laminate structure. Those outer layers shield the dye from direct ultraviolet exposure, which slows fading considerably compared with a surface-dyed film. It's a cost-effective construction that delivers a good balance of glare and heat reduction.

Extrusion dyed

The dye is mixed into the molten polymer during extrusion, as the film itself is being formed. Color runs through the whole thickness of the material rather than sitting in a layer. That produces consistent color throughout and materially better durability — this is a color-stability construction.

Solution dyed

The dye is dissolved into the polymer solution before the film is formed at all. It is the most thorough of the three: the color is part of the material's chemistry, not an ingredient added to it. The result is richer color saturation and higher optical clarity, and it holds its appearance longest.

The short version: dye-in-laminate protects the dye, extrusion dyeing distributes it, solution dyeing dissolves it into the material. Move down that list and you get progressively better color stability and optical clarity.

Will dyed tint turn purple or fade?

That failure mode — film going purple, hazy and bubbled after a few summers — is real, and it's what gave dyed film its reputation. It happens when a cheap film carries dye in an unprotected surface layer where ultraviolet light breaks it down directly. The dye degrades unevenly, blue and black pigments fail first, and what's left reads purple.

Read that table honestly: on heat, these three films are the same. All reject 26% of infrared; total solar energy rejection spans 38–40%. Anyone telling you one dyed film runs meaningfully cooler than another is selling. Two things worth reading off all three tables. UV rejection is ≥99% at every shade — including the near-clear NR 70 at 69% visible light transmission, so you don't have to go dark to protect skin and interiors. And reflectance never exceeds 7%, so the non-reflective look holds whichever shade you pick.

The honest summary: ceramic rejects roughly three and a half times more infrared heat. If a hot cabin is the problem you're solving, that is the difference you're paying for, and dyed film will not close the gap.

Where dyed film genuinely wins is everything other than heat: the same clean non-reflective look, the same 99% UV block, comparable glare control, at the lowest cost in the range. Choosing your shade

Two things decide the right shade: what's legal where your vehicle is registered, and how much glare reduction you want.

Window film laws vary by state and country. In the U.S., film is generally not permitted on the front windshield but is allowed on side and rear windows, with allowable light transmission — and in some states allowable reflectance — set by state law. Dyed film is comfortably within reflectance limits everywhere. Check the state-by-state chart from the International Window Film Association, and confirm with your dealer before choosing.
